Hiya, I am really in need of help !
I have a Dell Dimension E520 running Vista Home Basic.
Havent installed anything or fiddled with anything at all.
Switched it on yesterday and it got past the vista logo, right up to where you would expect it to switch to the desktop when I got the following message:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem.
C:|Windows\system 32\userinit.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS: 11e7 IP:0100 OP:ff fe 3c 00 3f
Choose close to terminate the application

You then have two options to click on "Close" or "Ignore"
It doesn`t matter which one you click the message dissapears and you are left with a blank light blue screen with nothing happening.
The only thing I can do is "ctrl alt del" and get the task manager up but nothing else.

Finally I tried the "system restore point" and put it all the way back to the earliest setting, and it still doesn`t work and I get the same error message.

Unfortunately I don`t have a disc, as I think I have a partitioned hard drive.

I don`t really want to blank the system as I have loads of work on it that I can`t afford to lose. I know I should have made a back-up....this will be a lesson I won`t forget!!

Does anybody have any suggestions.....please:D
