I am a new XP user and did not realize that
dual boot was avaiable on the system.
I had some logon problems so I desided to
re-install XP... now I have 2 versions on
my comp.. at boot it goes to a command promp
and have to choose the install to boot!
How do I get rid of second install without
losing first!

Rob, if the second version of WinXP is labeled WinXP2 or something like
that you can delete anything to do with that
version. Then rt click on MyComputer>select Properties>Advanced>Startup
and Recovery-Settings>Make sure you have
WinXP ver1 in the Default Operating System box. Then uncheck the Time to
display list of operating systems box.

First, you need to determine which installation is actually the one that boots. Are they on the same partition or hard drive? Different partitions?

Once you've determined the correct one, click Start, Run and enter C:\BOOT.INI This will open the BOOT.INI file in Notepad. Remove the entry that points to the non-booting install, and save the file. You can then delete the folder that it pointed to. If you're unsure of what you're deleting, post back with the contents of your BOOT.INI file and more information about how many hard drives/partitions you have, where the defective and working installation of XP are installed and etc.

Hi,
Edit Boot.ini from System Properties [Winkey+Pause/Break]>Advanced
tab>Startup and Recovery>Settings>Edit
Leave the top entries
alone and look at the entries under [Operating Systems].
There are probably two exact entries, one above the other.
You have a different folder name for the second install
If this is so, you can delete one of them (the one that
shows a different name than the original folder for the OS
in the "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT" line
where the second OS will be different than WINNT) and
should be in good shape.

Hi Rob,

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig
Then go to the Boot.ini Tab and click on Check All Boot Paths. If you
receive a warning about a duplicate path: Do you want to remove, choose
yes.

Or...

Right click the My Computer icon/Properties/Advanced/Startup and
Recovery/Settings/System Startup/Edit.
