HELP! Tools applications imediately quit

In my Windows XP Pro, various tools applications like tasklist.exe, quit in
about 1 millisecond after starting from the Start Run. However, if I use
the Cmd window, all is fine.
I have spent hours seeking a solution, any suggestions would be most
appreciated.

Hey Wilson.... I also had this problem and it turned out to be a virus.

Thank you Mark, this is a good workaround and perhaps the only solution I
have.

Thank you Newfdog, one of the first attempts I made to fix the problem was a
Norton virus scan. My system was clean. I also run Ad-aware pro. I believe
that I have tried everything but a re-install.
