HELP! still can't recieve mail!

D

drdenise

I am still not able to receive email. My windows mail asks for user and
password, and entered correctly it still continues to request I reenter this,
then gives me the following error message:

Account: 'mail.hughes.net', Server: 'mail.hughes.net', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] invalid user or password', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I have uninstalled AVG, deleted the email account, rebooted my computer,
installed Avast! virus program, restarted windows email, and I am still
getting this error message. Now what can I do......very very frustrated and
hating Windows Vista with a passion.

Have you asked hughes.net for their instructions for setting up to use
their email server? If they haven't written instructions for Windows
Mail yet, use their instructions for Outlook Express, but under
Windows Mail instead. The instructions are probably somewhere
on their web site.

Unfortunately, I have done this over and over and over. I tried to alter
settings, delete the account. I have closed and rebooted the entire
computer, Windows Mail, stopped the mail scanning option......maybe I need to
do this standing on my head. I have deleted virus programs and deleted the
email account, rebooted the computer with NO virus program running, added the
email account back, then closed the Windows Mail program, started it again
with no antivirus program, it is making absolutely no difference. None.
Maybe we should contact Bill Gates himself to ask him to fix this.

I have written instructions, and have used that. I contacted hughes a bit
ago and am awaiting a reply to see if there is anything additional I can do.
I have another computer with Windows XP and outlook, and it is receiving mail
without any problem, so I don't believe it is a server issue. The Windows
Mail was working fine until 2 days ago. First it would not send the emails
for a long time, then about 12 hours later, I couldn't receive anything as I
described above.

It may be time for you to consider downloading and installing Windows
Live Mail:

http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

It gets around some of the problems for Windows Mail.

to install Avast!-TURN OFF MAIL SCANNING! Then, delete your email
account from Windows mail. Get out of Windows Mail then back in & add
your email address as if it were a new account.

I downloaded Windows Live and that didn't work either. I can get my email by
going in thru the hughes webmail, or can get it on a different computer, but
not on my laptop with Vista.

So, it's probably not an email program issue or a server issue. Are you
running any other type of non-Microsoft software that might interfere with
email, perhaps anti-spam, anti-spyware, or firewall? Recently we came
across several Toshiba laptops that had email problems because of an SMS
program that interacted with email. You might take a look at the StartUp tab
of msconfig.exe to see if anything unusual is running in the background.

I am having similar problems and I do have a Toshiba. I looked at msconfig -
but not sure what I am looking for. I can't tell what is unusual and I am not
familiar with "SMS". Do you have any more information along these lines?

Here are my Startup Items:
Adobe Acrobat, Alps Pointing-device Driver, Chicony traybar, ConfigFree(TM)
Tray, HD Audio Control Panel, HWSetup, iTunes, KeNotify Application, Lexmark
Connect, Lexmark Imaging Studio, lxdcmon.exe, QuickTime, StartCCC, SVPWUTIL
Application, Synaptics Pointing Device Driver, TOSHIBA Button Support,
TOSHIBA Flash Cards, TOSHIBA Power Saver, TOSHIBA Zooming Utility, Windows
Defender

iTunes and Quicktime are new (installed after the troubles started). The two
that I keep wondering about are TOSHIBA Power Saver and StartCCC - but I
honestly don't know anything about either.

Thanks,
Besi

I could write a long paragraph on how unnecessary most of your
StartUp items are, but that would be going far beyond the scope of
this newsgroup. I have a policy that on my computers nothing gets
loaded in the StartUp tab of msconfig except for Windows Defender
and my antivirus. That said, I don't see anything in your list that is
particularly harmful to Windows Mail.

If you are having problems with Windows Mail, let us know the details.
