help restoring user

My son recently downloaded a virus on my pc. The normal virus scanner i use
did not detect it. i downloaded a removal tool from the web. everything
seemed to work fine until i attempted to log in the next day. It gave me a
message Domain not found and would not let me log on. (It is a single pc with
no domain being logged into). I could not log in under any user name or as
administrator. Could not log in in safe mode. I booted from my windows cd (XP
Pro). in the past i have run windows repair and reinstalled into the same
directory, just had to download a ton of patches and everything was fine.
this time when the system came back up i have only one user name. all of the
programs i have installed are gone and the other useres are not visible from
the login screen. I attempted a system restore. The only date in there was
after i reinstalled windows. All of the user names and data are still on the
hard drive. i can access the folders with no problem. I know i can copy info
into a new profile, but i am hoping for a miracle and not have to reinstall
all of the programs on the hard drive. Any ideas on how i can resore thing to
yesterday?
