Two XP Pro SP2 machines connected via LinkSys hub (just a hub, not switch or
router)

* SP2 firewall disabled
* Computer Browser service running on only one machine (laptop1)
* Workstation service running on both machines
* Different computer names
* Same Workgroup name
* Netbios enabled over TCP/IP in the WINS tab of Advanced TCP/IP network
adapter settings
* Anonymous login enabled on both machines
* Guest account ON on both machines.

On Laptop 1 -
ipconfig /all gives (unfortunately I can't just cut & paste these because
they are only connected to each other and not the internet)

Obviously this appears to be a browser problem, but I don't know where to go
from here (even with PChuck's network troubleshooting page.) Any help y'all
may have to offer would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Warm regards,

Jim

Warm regards,

Jim - you do not state what problem you are having.
Also. IP addresses in the range 169...... indicates private addressing by
XP - indicating services of DHCP are not available.

Oh! Haha. The problem is that this is supposed to be a tiny network for if
two people in my office have to go on a business trip together. I want both
machines to be able to see and access all the files on the other. But I can't
even ping the other machine, much less read and write files to it. I have now
gone through everything I can figure out that might be applicable at PChuck's
page and I am at a total loss at this point. 8(

You guys aren't going to believe this. I wish I had discovered it 3 hours
ago. After tearing my hair out for hours checking every concivable setting on
both machines... I unplugged the switch and plugged it back in again. Network
works fine. GEEZ I wish I had done that much sooner. 8P

Thanks again for your help. 8/
