My son's computer crashed and we were unable to do a system restore. We got
an XP Disk from my other son and installed with that. When the computer
re-booted there was nothing on the desk top and we can not get the connected
to the internet. We are using Cable internet but his computer keeps saying it
can not detect an internet connection.
Any help PLEASE????

After you clean-install an operating system, you must then install the
drivers for all the hardware in the system. This means drivers for the
motherboard, audio, video, network adapters, modems, etc.

Get drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Did you try and reinstall the Cable internet software? Until you get the
Cable internet installed, the previous information does not help you ...
sort of a Catch-22.

Your only recourse, would be to check everything out from another PC,
download what you need, save it to CD, and try and install on your system.

Does anything show up under Control Panel | Network Connections?

Cable internet should not require any software installed on the computer to
work. That should be extras (like antivirus, etc), but the cable software may
include the drivers needed to install the network interface card if it was
obtained through the cable company. So yes, the previous suggestion would
have done just fine.

Plus, they did have a CD for the internet, i'm pretty sure that they would
have tried that before posting to this newsgroup.

So I guess that the Windows XP CD that contains the Internet software as you
are possibly referring to, will also supply the IP addresses and all other
information for the Cable modem to use to get to the internet.

The Cable modem drivers that you are talking about, does nothing to
configure Windows for using the internet. You have to do that manually, as
supplied by the ISP company they are using. That is the additional software
I was referring to.

Thanks so much everyone!! We had to re-install drivers for just about
everything and am still looking for the one for burning CD's, which his
computer HAD come with, but we will find it.

This community has been so helpful to me and I thank all of you for that!!
