Help with internet access

We currently have a Dell laptop with XP at home. My son bought a used Dell
from a friend and we have it hooked to a wired router where our other
computers are hooked up. We loaded the XP operating system disc we have
from our laptop onto the new Dell. We were able to get a windows activation
code by calling the number and entering the code they gave us. When we
tried to load the driver and utility disc, we get (Setup is unable to
recognize this computer as a Dell computer and will now exit.) When I type
in ipconfig at the cmd prompt I do get an IP address but we are not able to
access the internet. Can anyone help trouble shoot? Thanks

The computer should have come with some way to install an operating system.
Was or is there a partition with the installation files?
Did the computer have XP installed?

From another computer with Internet access, go to Dell's tech support
website for your specific model laptop. Download drivers for the
motherboard chipset, audio, video, network, etc. and any laptop-specific
software. Then burn the drivers to cd-r or put on a large-capacity usb
thumb drive and take them to the Dell laptop. Install them.

To find out exactly what hardware is in the laptop, use one of these free
system inventory programs:
