Help - .pst files

I had to have the software reloaded on my computer due to spyware and I had
asked to have my e-mail backed up. I was given a disk with "archived" data
file and an "outlook" data file. When I try to import the .pst file back I
am getting access denied, I do not have permission. I called the place back
that repaired the computer and they are telling me I need to bring it back in
with the disk because there is a special way that it should be done. Why
they didn't do this before I picked up the computer puzzles me. Does anyone
know how to get this info back into outlook?

Sandy,

It sounds as though one of two things has happened. Either they placed a
password on the .pst's when they created them or the files may not be any
good (corrupt).
If it is the first, they better not charge you. If it is the latter, then
either they didn't check it or your data was already corrupt. Importing a
..pst is a quite simple process. One thing you may try however is, copy the
..pst's off the CD on to your hard drive. Once done, right click and select
properties and verify that the read only attribute is unchecked, if it is
not, then uncheck it. Then try to import again.

As posted many many time in this group - do NOT use the import function
for pst files. it's the fastest way to corruption.

Firstly, do NOT use the import function with pst files - it's the
quickest way to a corrupt file.
Copy the pst file to your HDD. Do NOT overwrite any existing file.
Remove the read-Only attribute. (Right-click-properties).
then you have two choices. Either open Outlook, go to File-Open-Outlook
Data File and open the copied file. You can then drag your data to the
existing file, OR, in Control Panel-Mail-Data File-Add you can add the
copied pst file and set that as the default delivery location.

Fine, then redirect Outlook to point to the particular .pst you need. But, in
this specific case the .pst will then still need to pulled from the CD to the
hard drive before that can happen and once again she must make sure that the
read only attribute is not there.

Thanks a million, most info pulled over. I lost my address book. Do you
know what may be on the "archived" file?
