help: problem with explorer at startup

recently i have been having a problem with XP. the
computer boots up until i see my desktop, but there are
no icons and no startbar. if i bring up the task manager,
there is an "explorer" process running. if i terminate it
and restart it (by running the "New Task" command), then
the icons and startbar appear and everything is normal.

please help me fix things so i don't have to do this
every time!!!
