I just loaded beta2 (defender). was using MSAntispyware (beta1).
I see a lot of posts about updating. I do not get an error message, and it
would be a first, when I hit the "update" nothing happens. Its not even
trying to get out on the web to find any updates, because my firewall isn't
coming up to ask me if I want to let anything out. And it ALWAYS asks.
I found this online, but am very leary:
mpas-f_fbc7c72125772bcde71d1841261621d33158f294.exe. It was/is supposed to be
an update.
Can someone give me some advice on what to do? How to update?
Or just go bck to beta 1?
Thanks I appreciate it.

Hello Briab Guy,

AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the
BITS service. This service is specifically designed, as I understand it to
minimize bandwidth impact.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/bits/bits/bits_start_page.asp

Do you have automatic updates turned on--for Windows?
I think the right strategy for a dialup user is just to ignore the update
process--let the bits service do its thing--dial in when you want, hang up
when you want. Bits should use unused bandwidth when it can, resume, etc,
until it gets the file in.

You can test it next Monday or Tuesday with the next update.

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

Engel,
Thank you for the quick reply. I have used bit torrents before, but this
looks new to me. But it explains why my firewall is not catching it.
I have broadband. And also keep automatic updates on.
Here is the stupid question; How am I going to be able to tell if it works
on Monday? Other then cking the update itself?
And, is it current now with updates, or not untill Monday?
I checked the history and it shows nothing.
Thanks again.

Engel has given an excellent response. If AutoUpdate gets through your
firewall, Windows Defender should be getting through--you should get a
balloon from the program stating that it is looking for updates, followed
some time--minutes? later, by a success message.

If you want to get updates manually, and more quickly, go to WindowsUpdate
or MicrosoftUpdate.
