Using Linux you'll be able to enter into a choice of runlevels
(each runlevel runs different configuration of services and
applications) without having to bother with the hassle of
restarting your system. Switching between runlevels is quick and
easy. One of the runlevels (usually runlevel 1) is very
minimalist (single user admin access only), running only the
basics--what you might call 'extreme safe mode'. Runlevel 3 runs
the basics, servers network (this includes the Internet) and
multi-user support--what you might call 'safe mode'. Usually
it's the primary runlevel to make major system administration
changes without depriving your users of the services you're
providing.
Runlevels are of course 100% configurable allowing you full
control of which applications and services to run.
