Help! Please! with Motherboard Install

Problem: Newly installed motherboard. Never used. I push power button,
system starts to run for 2 to 5 seconds, then shuts down. Everytime.

This is an upgrade to an A7N8X with Athlon XP2800+ cpu and it has not
yet worked. I believe that I have installed everything correctly. The
memory is brand new KBYTE 512 2700. I have swapped power supplies and
memory with another computer. I have tried booting without the hard
drive attached, without the video card installed and with all other
cards installed and removed. I even swapped power switches. The video
card is a 2001 model year card by Vision Tek. I don't know the voltage,
but the red light on the motherboard is not lighting up to indicate a
problem. The power supply is rated at 250w.

I have not yet tried removing the cmos battery.

What could be causing this?

Thanks,

Robert

Hi,

Everything I've ever read about using an Athlon says that one should use
a 300w PS. And that information goes back to when I put together an Athlon
900. I don't think the power requirements have gone down. I've heard folks
speak every now and then of a 250w but it's usually a quality PS to begin
with. I'd first start with a known good quality PS with everything else out
except the graphics card. I wouldn't even connect the hdd at this point. If
you still have a problem then change the RAM.
Good luck.

I forgot to mention that you should definitely have a graphics card
installed or there won't be any chance of it starting, most likely at least
a 4x AGP.

First guess is that the power supply is insufficient capacity.
Try a _NAME-BRAND_ 300-350W power supply.
You might also see if the board has a 100/133 FSB jumper and set that to
100MHz (think if it's there, jumper would be to the left of the
northbridge heatsink). Also try clearing the CMOS.

Check the voltage specs on the cpu...then make sure the board is
loading with those specs.

Have a nice week...

Turned out to be thermal protection. I turned the heat sink around 180
degrees and it works perfectly. Thank you all for your insight.
