Help Please! Comp went black .......

said it was shutting down because of some error to prevent ___? Said if it
was the first time I've seen this to Restart... I did that ... some weird
screen came out that I got out of and I rebooted. Now my computer clock (and
other stuff??) has gone back to January 2002.
What happened? How do I correct this?? Thanks!

Hi Colette,

See if you can boot into the BIOS and set the time in there. Saves changes
and exit.

If you get that error again, write it down and post back.

Thank you soooo much for the quick response. One question for the 'computer
illiterate" How do I boot into BIOS? Not sure what BIOS is. Sorry.

Okay... figured out BIOS and was able to change date. Few min later comp
went down again. I got the Stop Error Screen... then something about
Physical dump of memory and it was counting down
STOP:0X0000008E (oxC0000005,OXF92B138F,0Xf4F7oA3C, OXOOOOOOO)
Class PNP.sep-address
Then it was gone. HELP please!! Thank you.

When you restart your computer look for a message, usually in the lower
corner of the screen, that will tell you what key to press to enter the
SETUP or BIOS for your machine. It could be the Delete key or the F8 key.
Keep hitting it until you get into the SETUP or BIOS screen.

if you get a error message like that again like "STOP:0X0000008E" copy and
paste the referance after the stop into the microsoft search (top right of
web screen and it will take you to the problem. I am asuming you are using XP.

Okay... sorry for the delay. Comp kept shutting down. Then I ran
housecall to see if something showed up, miracously it got all the way
through with no shutdown. One virus, non-cleanable, I deleted it. Then came
into here to reply and couldn't log in. This stupid spyware that is
recurrent keeps me from being able to 'log in' to any site. I have to run
Ad-aware to fix it. (but it comes back later) No.. I haven't installed
anything new. No software, drivers, absolutely nothing. The comp hasn't
shut down again (knock on wood) Do you think with the inital date thing that
doing a System Restore would help?? Thanks again for your help!

To boot into the bios (Built in operating system) you reboot th
computer and watch. It will say 'Press F2 for bios' or another key
they are different on different machines. In the bios you can set al
sorts of things within the computer including time and date. :

Hi Lady,

That (restore) might be a good idea. Also, make sure that your ad-aware
software is updated. I don't know which ad-aware you use but there are 2
good free ones: www.lavasoft.com and
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ . I would run both of those
and apply all updates. Make sure your computer is protected with a firewall
too. Sygate And Zone Alarm both offer free editions.

You might want to consider (not necessary though) a repair install. Look in
the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup for assistance on this one.

Well I spoke too soon. 15 min after posting it shut down again. This
time with the message: STOP 0x00000050 Win 32k.sys Address Bf820DF5
When it restarted it looked crazy. It was the colors. Not 256. But
couldn't find 256 in the drop down box in Dispay/properties. So I did a
System Restore. Only date that was bold was yesterday. So I clicked on it
and went through that. When it rebooted it said System Restore couldn't
restore to that date. BUT the colors were back to normal. Now what??
I'm losing my mind.

Hi Newtechie,
Ad Aware SE is updated and have scanned numerous times the past 2 weeks
because of a couple that just won't go away. I've not gotten anywhere
unfortunately with the LavaSoft Support forum as far as getting them off
completely. I have a Firewall with Nortons... should I add another of the
Free ones? Can you have 2 Firewalls?

oops... forgot. I've also been running Spybot. Plus I downloaded SpyGuard
and Spy Blaster a week ago. Two suggestions given to me for 'protection'.
Depsite all this I'm obviously still getting zapped. Could it be because of
the Firewall?? I don't do anything online except an EBay Business, emails,
etc... No games, no music, nada.

Hi Colette,

There's no need to run 2 software firewalls. One is fine.

I think you do a repair install. Click on the link below and scroll down
the part where it gives you instructions on "How the Repair Install".
You'll probably have to reinstall SP2 if you installed before. Just in case
something goes wrong I would back up any data, files, folders, etc. that you
need. Post your results back. Good luck!
