Help Please: App Installation Problems

C

Ceekay

When trying to install some apps on a new Win2K system I am getting an
"Unhandled Exception". It is giving Error Number: 0x80040707. The
description is: "Dll function call crashed: Instutil._LQueryEx" (remainder
not visible).
All service packs and patches have been applied, I have tried suspending the
AV while installing and have checked the registry to ensure that all the
common program locations are correct. I have tried installing the software
on another Win2K system to test and is fine.
The software vendor tells me that it is a corruption in the memory map and
cannot help me & I must admit I was a bit dissapointed after purchasing a
full version of 2K professional (not OEM) that there is no support from
microsoft.
Any help from this community gratefully received.

Hi Dan
-was this a clean W2k install?
Yep. New Disk
-has OS been otherwise ok, no hiccups?
No Problems
-anything in event viewer?
Couple of recent errors
This is the error when I try to install
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0
and I seem to be getting the following error with my anti virus s/w but I
have disabled this and tried installing the app.
Event Type: Error
Event Source: BackWeb Client - 4476822
The description for Event ID ( 4 ) in Source ( BackWeb Client - 4476822 )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
The following information is part of the event: Failed to fetch user token
(error = 127).

-oddities in device manager?
None
-tried sfc.exe (system file checker)?
All OK
-single user, admin privileges?
All OK (tried from admin as well)

Any ideas ?
Thanks
Chris

Chris - running out of ideas.
- failure to connect to server sounds normal if mailhandler install
failed. But maybe part of it is running.
- the backweb client failure sounds normal if there's no net connection.
The AV program just uses backweb to probe its homesite signature
databases during idle-connect moments to check for new updates and
download if any.
- a google for the entire original quoted message as you posted it finds
no hits. That msg must be app-specific.
- a google for just the first part of the original message, "Dll
function call crashed:", also in quotes, yields many hits. Perhaps one
of these (probably from a different app, or containing a full
explanation of what/where/why/how/when would ring a bell and yield an
important clue.
- if the home website of any of those problem applications has a
searchable knowledge base, you might try that with the shorter character
string. Try the Microsoft KB too (support.microsoft.com) if you haven't
searched there for that shorter character string. There's also
www.jsiinc.com, an extremely useful resource (JSI, Inc.)

If I think of anything else I'll come back. Maybe someone else, etc etc,
I hope. And good luck.

Chris - Went to one of those Google hits and found the following, which
tells me it may be a subtle problem and might involve InstallShield:
-----------------------------
RESOLVED: Installation problems with Macromedia Cold Fusion /
Installshield 6.22
Upon attempting to install the following list of Macromedia software titles:
Homesite 5.0
Cold Fusion Studio 5.0
Cold Fusion 4.5>5.0 Upgrade
Cold Fusion Enterprise 5.0

I get the following error on an NT4 SP6a, and Win2k SP2 systems (two of
each): (these machines are a variety of stand-alone servers and domain
members, and I have tried this in and out of the domain, connected and
disconnected from the network)
Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040707
Description: Dll function call crashed: ISRT.GetPorts
Setup will now terminate.

Here's the resolution that worked for us:

Disable the "Print Spooler" service before running the ColdFusion installer.

1. Open Control Panel: Start --> Settings --> Control Panel
2. Double-click "Services"
3. On the list of NT Services, right-click "Print Spooler"
4. Select "Stop"
5. Select "Properties"
6. Under Startup Type, select "manual" or "disabled"
7. Reboot your NT Server
8. After rebooting, verify that the Print Spooler is still "stopped".
9. Re-run the ColdFusion Server installer.
10. After installation, re-set the Print Spooler service to Startup
type "Automatic" and start the service.

Thanks for all of your help Dan. It hasn't solved the problem but it has
given me quite a few pointers. The problem is definitely within the
installer.
Thanks again
Chris
