Help on "right click" "save picture as"... only option is .bmp

M

MrLarry

While on the internet (MS-XP IE6 with SP2) when I attempt
to "right click" on a picture and "save as" the only
choice for a file extension is .bmp for a bitmap file.

Up until a few weeks ago the default was .jpg which is my
preferred file extension for saving images.

Does anyone know how to correct this? Is it some sort of
registry error?

Thanks.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Why is Bitmap my only option to save a picture?

Courtesy of Kaylene aka Taurarian:

To empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Delete Files

To turn off graphic compression in the AOL client
1. Go to Preferences in AOL.
2. Click Internet properties (or WWW in some versions).
3. Click Web Graphics.
4. Clear Never compress graphics (or Use compressed graphics in some
versions).

or..........

Jan,

Thank you for helping me with this problem. First of all,
it isn't my temporary internet files. They are emptied
regularly and I've cleared them out several times today.

I did have two files in my downloaded files folder that
were marked as unknown. I deleted them, rebooted, but no
luck. Next I ran system file check (sfc /scannow) but that
didn't help. Finally I deleted all of the files in the
downloaded files folder (there were about 6 - mostly
active-x objects). Once again I rebooted, but still no
luck.

I've tried everything in each of the Microsoft knowledge
articles, but it appears that I'm at a dead end. I think
the problem may have started around the time I downloaded
the Service Pack 2 around 4-5 weeks ago, but I can't say
for sure that SP2 is the cause.

I have Paint Shop Pro that I can use to copy/paste as new
image/ and then save as .jpg but it's a pain in the ass.

Any other suggestions?

Regards,
Larry

Hi MrLarry :)

To restore the default file association after SP2 go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download, unzip and merge the REG file, "JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix"
Some image/graphics programs will change file associations.

Programs that may behave differently in WinXP SP2

Hi Troll, I too experienced this problem, started all of a sudden 2 days ago
whereas nothing was changed in my settings. My questions then is: what did
you click on (in your firewall settings -program- to fix it? Is that a
Norton Firewall.
I have a Gateway Centrino and I am completely lost on what to do with this
nuissance.

Thanks for your help

My question: Have you finally resolved the problem? If so, How Please!

Thanks
