You need to format it first. Did you do this? Does the hard drive show up in
the BIOS? Can you see it in Administrative Tools>Disk Management?

This new hard drive of yours...did it come with instructions?...or does
the manufacturer's website have instructions?

To format a drive go to Disk Management on your Windows PC, (right click on
the My Computer
icon, then select the Manage option, then in the Computer Management window
select Disk Management).

Is this new hard drive installed as the only hard drive?
Is it going to be your second hard drive? Is the computer
still working with Windows XP installed and running?

If the computer still has Windows XP installed, after
starting the computer, right click on My Computer icon and
select Manage. The use the disk management functions to
partition and format the new drive.
