Help needed in getting my computers to print.

Guest

I have a desktop with WIndows 98 and a laptop with WIndows XP. The printer
his a LaserJet 4 which I have connected through a parallel port to a HP
jetdirect plus box. From the jetdirect box I have a network cable going from
there to the router. When I try to printer from either computer it can't
find the printer. How do I get this thing to work? Thank you!

Well, if you don't want to use the JetDirect software, try the MS method:

1. Configure the printer with a compatible static IP - you can do this
through the control panel on the printer.

2. On the PC, run the Add Printer wizard - select Local NOT Network
printer, and clear the auto detect check box.

3. Select create new port - select standard TCP/IP port and enter the IP
for the HP. Click Next and you will be able to install the appropriate
drivers.

The Windows 98 computer will have to use the "TCP/IP Printer Wizard"
software (formerly known as JetDirect TCP/IP) software that came with the
JetDirect box or can be downloaded from HP's web site. For the Windows XP
computer you can follow Doug's advice.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try this stuff out. The JetDirect didn't come
with any software, though. I hope they have some on HP's site. It says it is
supposed to be plug and play. I did get this working before without any
software but than all of a sudden it just quit working. Can't figure out why
or how to get it back to the way it was.

Ok, I must be dumb because I can't get this. I've finally had time to work
on this and still can't get it to work. I went to HP and downloaded the
file. I run through the wizard and it can't find my printer anywhere. I
tried with IP address and everythign else you could. I press the test button
on the print server, though, and it prints a configuration page. Any clue as
to what I am doing wrong? I have a cable running from the parallel port on
the printer to the JetDirect box. From the JetDirect box I have a network
cable running to the router. Anything you guys can think of? Thanks.

Manually configure the printer in the JetDirect software using the IP
address the JetDirect box says it's using on your network.

I manually set the IP address in the printer to that of the JetDirect box but
I still can't get it to print. Is there possibly a setting on the computer
that is not right? Thanks for your help so far.

FYI, I can print if I hook up the printer directly to the desktop computer if
this helps any.

At this point I cannot help you any further. If you have set Windows 98 up
using the TCP/IP Printer Wizard and Windows 98 using a port type of TCP/IP
and have both set to the correct IP address of the JetDirect box - I don't
know why it wouldn't be working.

Maybe that is my problem. Maybe I don't have Windows 98 swet up using TCP/IP
printer wizard and windows 98 using a port type TCP/IP. Would you be able to
walk me through it to see if I did this part right?

You have to use the JetDirect TCP/IP printer software to set up a TCP/IP
printer in Windows 98. If you don't you will not be able to connect to the
printer. Windows 2000 and XP both support TCP printing but again, if you
don't tell the wizard you're printing to a TCP/IP printer it just won't
work.

This problem is similar to one that I am trying to solve - Hp2100TN printer
on a new XP pro desktop. Previously I printed (Windows 98 SE) via a Netgear
hub and eithernet cables to the pre-installed JetDirect card on the printer.
Had a bit of fun initially but eventually everything worked just fine - until
I acquired a new desktop with XP Pro. Reviewing Shaggy's problems, I think
that apart from connecting via the parallel port (because I have an ethernet
card installed) the same solution should apply? However, seem to remember
that with XP I cannot securely use the same ethernet connection for both
printing and for braodband internet access? If so, I do have a second card
available, but am wary of adding that complexity until I get things working...
Any advice would be appreciated
