tcpip printing

Mark Klebanoff

I have a home network consisting of the following:

1) Win98SE computer
2) Linksys befsr41wired cable router
3) Linksys wrt54g wired/wireless hub/router. The 54g is daisy-chained
to the 41 wired
4) OS/2 computer
5) A Dell Inspiron 5150 computer running XP home, that connects
wirelessly most of the time
5) Laserjet 2300 with a jetdirect 615n card

The Win98, OS/2, computers and the printer are hooked into 3 ports of
the wired router, and the Dell uses the wireless router.

The computers get their ip addresses from the 2 routers via dhcp, the
printer has a fixed address of 192.168.1.90. The Doze98 and OS/2
computers can print via tcpip with no problem. All 3 computers can
connect to the internet and share files with each other vis netbios
(netbeui for you windows types). All 3 computers can print to the
Epson 777 hooked up to the parallel port of the Doze98 computer, and
when I had an OKI610e hooked to the parallel port of the os/2
computer, everyone could print there too (although that was via
netbios)

The problem is that when I try to use HP's 2300 setup cd rom on the
Dell wireless computer, it can't find the HP printer. I've tried
inputting the jetdirect's MAC address, its IP address and its
Hostname, but HP's software still cannot find the printer. From a
wireless connection, I have full access to the net and the shared
resources on the other 2 computers. I can also ping the printer's IP
address successfully. I've tried disabling the firewall on the XP
before setting up the printer but it doesn't help.

what am I missing-- is there something I need to enable or disable on
XP or on the 54g router to let me set up this printer?

Alternatively, if I plug the Dell into a wired connection and set up
the printer that way, will it still work when I go wireless.

Forget HP and try doing this the MS way:

1. On the Dell, or whatever computer you are having trouble with, uninstall
any HP setup software.

2. Start the Add Printer wizard. Do not select Network Printer - select
Local Printer and clear any check boxes for auto detection.

3. Select Create new port - select Standard TCP/IP port and configure it
with the IP address of the HP.

4. If MS does not have XP drivers for a 2300, you will have to obtain them
from HP.

Thanks, I'll do that.
