Help! My computer is frozen!

Hi,
I was trying to upgrade to XP from ME and the setup is
getting frozen on the finalizing installation part. I
can't run anything - I tried to restore the computer from
the disk and manually, it won't work. I tried to hit
Shift - F10 and typed Xcopy User~tmp.@01 but it said that
it could not find the file, 0 copies made. I don't know
what to do and I really need my computer for work - Can
anyone help me?

I'm assuming that you were trying to install in place and not doing a
clean install; i.e., formatting the drive and then installing the new
operating system. Since the upgrade install didn't work, you will need
to do the clean install instead, then install your programs from cd's
and restore your data from backups.

Thanks Mike! But I have no idea how to do a clean install
because every time I start the computer, it goes to the
setup screen and tries to install XP from 47 minutes goes
thru the installation and always gets stuck on 17 minutes.
How can I go back and change my options? Thanks again for
your help.

*Warning - you will lose all data*

Boot to a win9x floppy boot disk, run Fdisk, delete partitions, create new
partitions, reboot to boot disk again, run format, (or reboot to xp cd,
format, install xp). Get boot disk here: www.bootdisk.com

Classically, when XP or Windows 2000 hangs during setup, there is something
wrong with hardware and or drivers to go along with it.
Recommend clean install (see other posters) & remove all peripheral cards
and modems one by one add them back to see which is the culprit.
It might be better if you would get another hard disk, install XP on the
new disk. In this way you can still get to your data on the other disk once
XP is up and running.
