Try to satrt in Safe Mode and look i the Event viewer for any Error messages
that happened on Restarting after a bad turn OFF and post them in your next
post.

Another Download the Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools from sony and run it on
your HDD to be sure it is Okay and not damaged by Hard Power down.

Then the Diagnostic tool for your HDD from the Sony website will tell if
your HDD is dead or still a live.
Yes it is F8 you are Right.

Get to the internet from another computer and go to the Sony website and
download the Exact Diagnostic tool for your laptop HDD.
Note write down the Laptop specs or a serial number to get the right tool
for your HDD specs, you will find it handy when you searchon sony website for
the tool.
Unzip it if it is ziped and make a folppy disk, if your laptop have just
CD/DVD create a CD and boot up your laptop with it and run it.
Also you may need to access the BIOS to make it boot from CD first.
Here the sony website:

Hi,
Try to look with the Cds which came with the Laptop and it will be labled
Utilities and open it on another computer and see if you will be able to make
a Diagnostic tool for your HDD.
If not do you hear a noise for the HDD when you try to boot up the Laptop or
CD spine, cooling Fan starting or flashing light on the screen?.
Bottom line, best if you take for a professional tech local to you they will
know if it is gone for good or it could be revivide and how much, if it worth
it then go a head if not then a new Laptop is the best way forward.
