if the error you are getting says you are running FAT32 then switch over to NTFS and then run chkdsk or try to run with this "scandsk" this second one was for win98se running FAT32 this may be of help

elainew23;

Formatting should have nothing to do with it.
I had XP Home and my hard drive was FAT32
and I could run both chkdsk and defrag no problem.
I now have XP Pro and HD is NTFS.
=========================

Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK |

Type: fsutil dirty query C: | ENTER

This will report whether C: is dirty or NOT dirty.
[[Volume - C: is NOT Dirty]]
If it reports that it is chkdsk will run every boot.
Also defrag has problems until this is cleared.
============

Scandisk is now Error-checking (chkdisk).
Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, check both boxes.
***You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.***

For a peek at the log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information

fsutil dirty query C: means>>
[[Queries to see whether a volume's dirty bit is set.
When a volume's dirty bit is set, autochk automatically checks the volume
for errors the next time the computer is restarted.

If a volume's dirty bit is set, this indicates that the file system may be
in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is
online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume
and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or
because corruption was detected on the volume. If the dirty bit is set when
the computer restarts, chkdsk runs to verify the consistency of the volume.

Every time Windows XP starts, Autochk.exe is called by the Kernel to scan
all volumes to check if the volume dirty bit is set. If the dirty bit is
set, autochk performs an immediate chkdsk /f on that volume. Chkdsk /f
verifies file system integrity and attempts to fix any problems with the
volume.]]

{volume is your hard drive}
=====================

Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your hard drive | Properties.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
Under Check disk options, check both boxes.
Reboot.
You can sit there and watch if you want. :blush:)
==========

Don't worry about this unless the above doesn'r work!
In an earlier post you said your drive was formatted FAT32.
Because of that::
If you have a DOS Boot disk, you can boot to DOS and run
chkdsk.exe, scandisk.exe or Scandskw.exe, if you have copies of those.

Boot Disks

DOS 6.22
Windows 98 SE
[[1. Most of the files above are disk images. Download the file to your C:
drive, put a fresh disk in your A: drive, then click on the file to create
the bootdisk.
2. If the Primary link is down, use the Alternate [Alt] link or Mirror Site
to download my disks.]]
