Warning: Web sites use cookies for several different reasons:

1. To collect demographic information about who is visiting the Web site.
Sites often use this information to track how often visitors come to the
site and how long they remain on the site.
2. To personalize the user's experience on the Web site. Cookies can help
store personal information about you so that when you return to the site you
have a more personalized experience. If you have ever returned to a site and
have seen your name mysteriously appear on the screen, it is because on a
previous visit you gave your name to the site and it was stored in a cookie
so that when you returned you would be greeted with a personal message. A
good example of this is the way some online shopping sites will make
recommendations to you based on previous purchases. The server keeps track
of what you purchase and what items you search for and stores that
information in cookies.
3. To monitor advertisements. Web sites will often use cookies to keep
track of what ads it lets you see and how often you see ads.

That said cookies can be used for good stuff too, like keeping track of a hotmail account.

Open up Internet Explorer. Click on the 'Help' menu. Click on 'About
Internet Explorer' A window will come up with an Internet Explorer graphic
Version: x.0.2800.1106

If on your computer the 'x' is a 6 go to step 1

If the 'x' is anything less than 6, go to step 2

1. Open up Internet Explorer, click on the tools menu (to the left of the
help menu), then click on 'Internet Options', Click on the 'Privacy' tab at
the top. Click on the 'Advanced' button near the bottom. Under the column
that says "First Party Cookies" Click Promt (or enable). Click OK, then
Click Apply in the Internet Options window.
2. Open up Internet Explorer, click on the tools menu (to the left of the
help menu), then click on 'Internet Options', Click on the 'Security' tab at
the top. Click on the 'Custom Level' button near the bottom. A window with
different settings will come up. Scroll down until you find the Cookies
section. Click Promt (or Enable) next to the 'Allow cookies that are stored
on my computer' option. Click OK, Click Apply in the Internet Options
window.

Ok I set the cookies up to accept and while the computer is powered on I can
close the browser for hotmail and start another browser
and hotmail keeps me signed in but when I shut down the computer and then
power up again - I have to sign in to hotmail all
over again what other option or setting am I missing now?

thanks so much for your help
