HELP!!!!!!.....Installing windows xp on external hard drive

G

Guest

just recently got an external hd(maxtor 160) for my work laptop. I'm trying
to install windows xp w/sp2 on it to keep my work and other stuff, seperate.
I don't want to load games/videos on my work hard drive in case something
goes wrong(that and I signed an aggreement not to do such things).

The first part of installation (copy files form cd,...) was ok. After that,
when windows try to boot first time from usb hdd, in the loading drivers
process, a blue screen appears, with error 7b.

What should i do to boot windows from the external usb hdd?
I'm using a Dell Latitude D800

I searched the net and others are having this problem...I know that you can
boot to the external(as my laptop gives the option to...else it wouldn't be
there)...just having found a solution...

Windows XP can only be installed on an "internal drive".
External drives are designed for file storage and backups.

No Windows operating system is designed to be
installed on an external drive. Even if it were possible,
it would run extremely slow and be of little use.

The utility you mentioned is only used to reformat
a USB drive. It has nothing to do with installing
a Windows operating system on an external drive.

| but it seems as though my hard drive is too big for that...

As Carey stated, no windows OS is "designed" to be installed on an
"external" hard drive. Even though Win9x had no provisions to prevent the
installation, it was not supported and ill advisable.. WinNT OS's (NT 4.0,
2k, XP) has the appropriate code to prevent the installation, once your
reach the "GUI" portion of setup - yes, it will allow you to boot from the
CD, and run the White Text on Blue Screen portion just fine, but when it
reboots to go into the GUI portion - kaboom - blue screen.
