Help installing W2000 SP4

H

Hillbilly

An HP Printer I need to use with an old machine running the default install
of Windows 2000 demands SP4 or the install of the printer's drivers fail.

There is no connection to the Internet nor a modem on this old machine.
There is an old CD that won't read the media I've burned on my Vista
machine,

I thought I could use SafeMode and install SP4 from the c:\ drive of
the host machine but there is no setup.exe in the download I thought
was actually the correct release of SP4.

So I also need some help actually finding the correct release of
Windows 2000 SP4 too and help from somebody who can tell me some tips
and procedures to follow or provide a URL to a page please...

I forgot to mention I have a Zip Drive on the machine with 100MB capacity
but the W2KSP4_EN.exe I have downloaded is 129MB. Any directions for me to
install SP4?

If all else fails, put it in a multipart zip or rar file, transfer it in
bits then extract.

I tried that by using WinZip to disassemble the W2KSP4_EN.exe cab file and
then transferred i386 on a couple of Zip disks to the c: drive because SP4
is 129MB and the Zip disks only hold 100MB.

So I put i386 and all of its contents on the c:\ drive and couldn't figure
out how to install as there was no setup.exe which is usually in the root of
i386. I tried running winnt.exe which was in i386 but it failed and asked
for WINNT32.

I remain stymied Sid.

No, don't disassemble the file. Read the Winzip help file entry for
"splitting zip files' (easiest way to explain) then just create a zip
file from the W2KSP4_EN.exe that is split into two pieces.

Transfer those two pieces individually to the target machine and use
winzip to extract the complete W2KSP4_EN.exe file from them. Then run it
as an executable.

You don't need winzip to extract it. You can use

W2KSP4_EN.EXE /x

to extract, then run \i386\update.exe to install

But i386 does not contain update.exe, only an instance of update.sy_

Help file? What a novel idea ;-)

I can't create a zip file from W2KSP4_EN.EXE because WinZip will only allow
me to extract that .exe and then make a zip archive from the extracted i386
folder which only then I can split which I've tried and learned it does not
solve this dilemma as once the split files are unzipped onto the target
device I need to use WinZip to rezip them and on;y then may I use WinZip to
make that newly zipped archive an executable. Once I made the executable
after trying this procedure the newly created .exe will only call WinZip
again and will not just run as an executable when called from the command
line.

I have another XP machine with Nero on it and I am obtaining CD-R media and
will try to burn W2KSP4_EN.EXE to that CD-R media at a slower rate of burn
which searching the web indicates is a common way to enable the old CD
drives to read what is on the media. I think this has been my mistake as I
used CD-RW media to burn the failed attempt and the old CD drives apparently
do not know what to do with a CD-RW disk; circumstances I have never needed
to cope with before.

You mean you can't:

- Open Winzip
- File > new archive
- (name new archive say OMG.zip)
- <Add-Window> pops up
- select file to add (W2KSP4_EN.EXE)
- before closing <Add-Window>, select "split" and select suitable split
point
- Winzip produces a split archive in small enough chunks to be
transferred to the other machine where you can then extract W2KSP4_EN.EXE

Are you saying that doesn't work?

In fact, I just tried it myself and it worked just fine. Like I said
originally "if all else fails" this is a relatively simple method of
getting the whole file across with your stated hardware (100 MB
Zip-drive) so that you can run the SP4 update automatically from the
executable without unpacking.

But as Dave says, if you can use a usb-flash drive of suitable capacity
then there's no point in using Winzip at all: just transfer the whole
file as-is. (I was unaware that you have usb drive access).

I followed your procedure and yes, it did split it using your procedure
thank you. I do --not-- have USB on the machine but I do have Iomega 100MB
Zip Disk. Now, later this week Thursday I should have no problem
transferring using the Zip disk media and I now have CD-R to use. If
W2KSP4_EN.EXE --should-- run and update Win200 when double clicking on the
..exe that I will burn to CD-R and I will have the Zip media to fall back on.

No, I didn't use that switch but now that you bring it to my attention I
will use it if needed. I'm also downloading from the link you referred JIC
so I have an instance you verify as good. It looks like I'm goog to go after
beingt taught a few tricks of the trade. You've all been top shelf guys
thank you.

Did you extract the files using /x switch? I just checked this one and it
does.

I'd forget about winzip. Just copy using usb thumb drive to machine and
run it or use a crossover cable to connect to the xp box.
