IE just crashed on me for whatever reason and now every time I try to open
it I get an error message saying that IE has encountered an error and needs
to close. I had an older version of Netscape (which I really don't like) on
disk and loaded it then updated it, the only way I could get on the
internet. I am running xp sp2, have my computer set to download all the
updates, and running av and ad-aware, all updated and run again. No virus
found, no spyware, nothing. Ran defrag and chkdsk, nothing. At the time of
the crash I was surfing around on eBay. Clicked an auction link and the
whole thing went down. Any clue what could have caused this or how to fix
it? I tried to go to the MS website and download IE again, but it wouldn't
work because it said I had a newer version already installed.

I was going to try to copy and paste the technical data from the error
report but it wouldn't let me. I will give you what the error signature
says if it helps any:

Appname: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 Mod name: unknown
Modver: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00020027

Your best approach would be to clear out Temporary Internet Files and
Temp Files, Cookies and other critters.

The best way to do this is:

Open Control Panel
Double Click Internet Options
Click the two buttons there that say Delete Cookies, and Delete Files.

This may take some time, but once done, you will be happily surfing.

Post back if it doesn't work.

Thank you thankyou!! It worked. I can open IE again!! Once I followed
your advice and tried once again to open IE, I got a different message:

IE has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close

The following addon was running when this problem occured:
File: sfg_310b.dll
Company Name: (not verified) Safeguard Corporation
Description: monitors and protects against threats

Now, what in the world is this? I followed the links on the error message
and disabled the add-on, but the question is - what is this and do I need
it? The only thing I can think of is that I have been running a start page
guard for months on my pc, could this be it?

It would seem to be the case ;) You can safely leave it disabled
though.
