HELP- I/O device error message

I am in desperate need of some direction,whenever i plug
my jump drive into my usb port i recieve an error
message, i am currently running windows xp,with service
pack 2. I haven't had any problem running this device at
the school, now that i'm trying to get my homework off of
it, it won't open up and gives me the I/O device error.
Please help me A.S.A.P I'm in terrible need to use my usb
storage device, which is called a jump drive.

Did it work correctly before you upgraded your OS?
