Help! I cannot get Windows Update to work.

Hello.

For some reason, Windows update won't for me anymore. When I try to use
it a
dialog box comes up saying that 'my security setting prohibit running
activex controls on this page'. The page indicates that I have to
install the ActiveX control by clicking on the tan bar in my browser
(like the ones that appear when windows blocks popups) however that
option never appears. I went into the internet options/security
settings and set everything back on default. It actually already was
but I
reset it. Still no go, I went into the properties and set it to allow
every
kind of activex control to see if windows update would work...no go. I
set
all security setting on low and it still tells me my security settings
won't
allow me to run activex controls on that page.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

I have tried re-registering some dlls which was a solution from a past
post, but no luck.

Try re-registering the following .dll files
Softpub.dll
Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Urlmon.dll

1. Click Start >Run and type
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
Click okay to register it
You should get a dialog box telling you that it was successful.
2. Repeat the process for the other .dll files.
3. Restart your computer and try the update site again.

Add Windows Update to the trusted sites zone:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
5. Clear the require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check
box.
6. Make sure that the following URLs are listed in the Web Sites box:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
