Although I have continuously reset the folder views, from time to time again
the folders--C:\, My Pictures, and any other system folder--keeps changing
to the Video Tasks on the side bar. I don't want you to think I'm being
picky just for a folder having the Video Tasks to one side, but that's not
the whole of the problem--when the C:\ drive folder has video tasks on it,
whenever I try to open a folder nested inside the C:\ the whole window
freezes and stops responding. After a while the window shuts down and
Windows Explorer starts up again.

I just want to know what causes this problem so I can avoid it and not have
to reset folders views all over again.

You're not being picky, I prefer all detailed views in my Windows Explorer.
It does sound like you have two issues here. The screen should not lock up
when accessing folders in the C:\ drive no matter what view you are using.
Have you checked for Spyware?

To change the folder view so it stays:

In Windows Explorer change the folder view to the way you like it. Then
click on Tools then Folder Options then click on the View tab. Next click on
the Apply to All Folders button. You will get a message stating that the
"changes will occur the next time you oppen them". Click on Yes and it should
be set from now on. In the same window you can also reset to the default
views.

Good Luck

That's what I always do but after using, say the Videos Folder, soon enough
the C:\ changes to Video details and it causes it to lag whenever i click on
a folder inside C:\

Any ideas?
