HELP Getting ERROR 6 Invalid Handle with my Modem

R

Robert J. Stevens

I am Getting "ERROR 6 Invalid Handle" with my Modem. I have tried three
modems all of which work on my Other systems [mostly WIN98SE]. My ISP
says something about "DRIVERS".
I am running WINXP PROF as installed from the CD as I can't get to the
Web to Update anything.
I tried an Upgrade install but that didn't change anything.
I also have a WIN ME System that I can dial in from and download as it
is connected to my Other Machines VIA Networking.
Can anyone give me a suggestion as what to do.

"My ISP says something about "DRIVERS".

"Driver: A program that controls a device. Every device must have a driver
program. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating
system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you
connect the device to your computer.

A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the
device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its
driver knows. In contrast, most programs access devices by using generic
commands. The driver, therefore, accepts generic commands from a program and
then translates them into specialized commands for the device."

Ask the manufacturer if they have a Windows XP driver.

The last Modem I am using is a PC-TEL 56K HSP Micro Modem which XP seems to
install using its own drivers. It didnt ask for the Mfgers one. I am searching
Microsofts support but so far no results.
I need to know how ERROR 6 is generated and how the Invalid Handle is passed.
All three modems give me the same results. I get signed on but just before the
Modem gives me connected it BOMBS
TIA

TED;
Thanks.
I'm downloading it right now. I've NOW Got my XP Linked to my ME Machine with
the Networking and Internet Sharing. If I can get the PC-TEL HSP Modem to work
on the XP Then I can swap the Connection and use the XP as a Firewall for the
Internet
