Help Dell D600 Laptop

No diff. The parts are just smaller and harder to get to.
Download drivers from the dell web site. Lookup your model and OS for
the right drivers.

I have a dell inspiron 6000 and the nic and wireless don't work out of
the box. The video works but not top performance without the dell
drivers.

It would have been nice if you had received the CD's with the laptop.
I bought my laptop from dell 30 months ago. I ordered at that time all
the drivers, apps, OS etc from them. I was lucky to get a tech that
sent them to me for free. I've heard people have to pay for them.
Drivers here. There may be a service tag # on the bottom of the
laptop. if so you can put that in and they will know instantly what
hardware you have installed. That makes things simple on the user.

I just won a used Dell D600 laptop in a raffle. Everything seems to work
just fine except I'm not certain there is a network card on the system
(specs say it has a wired and wireless LAN).

In the Device Manager there is a yellow ? at Other Devices. All items
(Ethernet Controller, PCI Modem, etc) have ?

I'm familiar with network cards in Desktops but not in laptops.

Help please.

Look on the bottom of the laptop for the Service Tag number.

Take that number to the Dell support site. You will be able to see the
complete list of hardware originally installed on the unit *and* download
all the correct drivers.

It sounds like the basic drivers were just not installed, though the
hardware is bascally identified. If you have highspeed internet, you can
download all the drivers on another system, burn them to CD, and install
them. This won't take long at all. Keep that CD with the original OS CD
for that laptop - it should have come with one, unless there is a restore
partition. If that's the case, figure out how to make an re-install CD
(from the manuals) and do so promptly.

I went to the web site and dl a group of network driver files (exe type)
and burnt then to a cd. Now how do I proceed?

Insert the CD and run the driver exe's! You will be done in no time.

Be sure that these are the correct drivers for your system, based on the
Service Tag on the bottom of the unit.

Success. I expanded the 6 exe files and one of them was the network driver I
needed. I now have my LAN connection to the Internet. Now I'll try to find
the wireless LAN which is supposed to be on the computer.

Many thanks.

Hi All,

Thank you for your help. Yes, I used the service tag info and dl all the
recommended drivers. Everything seems to work except the wireless LAN.

I'm really not certain if the computer has a wireless LAN on it (supposed
to) since I can't seem to get it to work (I'm using the wired LAN).

I did install the wireless drivers but I can't seem to get a wireless
connection. Yes, I do have a wireless modem that I can use with my other
laptop.

Suggestions please.

Jim,
I wonder if the wireless switch is on? I'm not sure about the D600, but my
D620 has a switch on the left side. When it's on you'll see a green "Wi-Fi"
light on the right hinge under the monitor. Just don't want us to overlook
the simple things.

Thanks for the reply.

I just discovered that the problem may be with my Belkin Wireless Router and
not with the D600 laptop.

I decided to fire up my other laptop and found that I could not make a
wireless connection. This same laptop did work in the past so I must have
another problem.

This is my setup - my desktop computer is connected to a Belkin Wireless
Router and then to a Linksys hardwire router. I did replace this computer
recently so it that a possible sourse of the wireless problem? My Network
connections only shows "LAN or Highh Speed Internet" - nothing about a
wireless LAN.

Suggestions please.

When you connect to your router via a wired connection (and you have to
since the wireless in inop right now), you have to go in and turn on the
wireless and set it up. At least my router allows the wireless to be
turned on/off.

I suggest you make it work without security to start. Just long enough
to make sure hardware works and then go back and setup WPA2 wireless
security unless your confident about wireless security setup. Your
router manual should have some explanation of how to set it up. I'm not
going to bore everyone here. WPA2 is supposed to be uncrackable
compared to WPA.
