Help ... Deleted my eMachine

R

Rph

Several months ago, my Windows 98SE eMachine began running very slowly,
and I thought I could speed it up by deleting a bunch of stuff, but I
think I deleted RegKeys, and now it won't boot. I had several messages
back and forth with eMachine techs, but all of their advice assumed
that I could get into Windows, or Safe Mode.. My computer won't even
recognize the CD drive, and when I put the bootable CD in the drive --
nothing happens. I don't really care about the computer, except that I
want my stuff (taxes, files). It does seem to know there is a floppy
drive, but of course the boot CD won't fit in there. Yeah, I know, I'm
pretty stupid.

If you have a second computer then just install the hard drive in the
second computer and copy the files you want to save on that HD and
mack a backup on a CD or DVD writer disc.
You will have to setup the second HD as a slave sometimes by a jumper
pin or sometimes they are already setup to be slave by cable select.
You could always use a friends computer also.

HTH.

Down load the required boot disk image from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Boot from the floppy then connect to your CD and run setup.exe

You should post your Windows 98 questions to a Windows 98 newsgroup. Try

Greenie, thanks for the link to the bootdisk. I downloaded the one for
Win 98SE, but I'm using a computer that is running Windows XP, and when
I put the floppies in the old e-Machine, I got this error message: "non
system disk error", I guess because the floppies were not formatted on
the old computer. Is there a way around this?

Thanks, Rph, for the suggestion to install the hard drive on another
computer. Would it have to be the same kind of computer, with the Win
98SE Operating System?

It doesn't matter if the second computer is running Windows 98, Windows 2000
or Windows XP. You will need to connect your old drive as slave and then you
should be able to read the data on it.

Thanks, Harry. Would that be "primary slave"? And, since the Windows
98 program isn't working on my old drive, will that hinder downloading
of my files to the new computer? Or will my new computer's Windows XP
override the old Windows 98?

Connect the Windows 98 drive as primary slave OR as secondary master or
secondary slave. The XP drive needs to be primary master. That is what
matters. If you have a friend who has experience with hardware you may wish
to ask him or her to help you.
