Help! Cannot install Flash player! Administrator/Security proble

Hi there!

Just wondering if you guys can help me...

My PC is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and I use internet explorer. I'm
now unable to install the Flash Player and Shockwave Player. When I try I
receive this message:

"You do not have access to make the required system configuration
modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrators account."

However, it's a home computer and I am running from the administrators
account. A few hours of Googling lead me to trying to use regedt to locate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

then the Security key but there is no Security folder there! Also most of
the settings read:

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set).

I'm set (or thought I was, anyway!) as the administrator of the machine but
it doesn't seem to recognise me at all. Is there any simple way to rectify
this problem?

I'd be very grateful if you could help me out here...

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Jay. Have you tried running a standalone full installer, or are you
installing online from the Adobe webpage? Here is a link for the standalone
full installers of both Flash Player and Shockwave :
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#sp
.. I suggest you try this if you have not already done so. Also, temporarily
disable your antivirus program while installing either Flash Player or
Shockwave. Also, do you already have older versions installed? If so, it may
help to run an uninstaller first (also downloadable at the above mentioned
webpage link).

Thanks!

Did as you suggested and was able to uninstall both Shockwave and Flash
player using the uninstallers. When I redownloaded and tried manually
installing both programs, Shockwave installed okay but Flash Player didn't.
Yet again I received the message:

"You do not have access to make the required system configuration
modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrators account."

I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any other suggestions of what could be
going wrong? Should I maybe post a HijackThis log?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Hi ,Jay. I am happy to hear that at least you have installed Shockwave.
Forget about posting HijackThis logs here, this is not the place for that
output. I suggest you go to Adobe support for help, starting with online
forums :
http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/ or FAQ's. I
have not encountered the problem you have with Flash Player since I do not
even have it installed on my computer. Do you have Norton Internet Security
installed or any other privacy control/antispyware which may be blocking
Flash Player installation, such as SpywareBlaster ?

Hi there!

Well finally managed to install Flash Player as well so all's well on that
score. The thing is, I'm still locked out as administrator, which is weird.
I do have Spyware Doctor installed and I've used CCleaner so don't know if
they're causing problems. All seems to be working now except for the
administrator thing so I'll muddle along as is until some other problem
arises!

Thanks for all your help, mate!
Cheers-

"Uh-huh" (You bet!), Jay. I like SpywareBlaster but you have to remember
that it has a setting to disable Flash Player from installing and running.
You can create custom Active-x blocking rules without having to set the
"kill-bit" in Registry Editor 32-bit. I use it for those annoying
"legitimate" Active-x controls like Microsoft Update. You might try it out
if you like. If you could install Flash Player you have Admin priveleges so
maybe you are alright now.
