HELP!! Cannot Boot!! Recovery Console

Help! I cannot boot my PC which uses WindowsXP because of apparently some
corrupt file. When I boot up normally, safe more, command line, when it hits
a file (I think a file with the name IPVNMON.sys that is in the system32
folder) and I"m not sure if it's this file or the next that is unamed that
is causing the system to automatically reboot.

So I go into the Recovery Console which seems to be the most worthless
euphamism I've ever experienced. It doesn't seem to recover anything or
allow me to do much. What can I do to "repair" my windowsxp installation? I
am scared to have to think about a reinstallation...

Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

Thanks Kelly but after doing so it goes into a reboot cycle as well and I
don't have the option of booting any more. The "Windows XP" screen appears,
blue dots go from left to right and then it turns off and reboots.

It's stuff like this that make me despite Windows and make me think that the
Mac, which I haven't touched for many years, should live forever and may
Windows be forever damned. There is very little troubleshooting to figure
out how to deal with problems like this and once it goes you are screwed.
I'm worried now since it will take forever to reload everything from
scratch, not even including all the updates and settings for every
application.

Then you aren't booting from your CD. Your boot sequence is switching
back to the HDD in this case. Bear in mind that in lots of systems
you can't just change the boot sequence to boot from CD, reboot and
just sit there and wait. Many BIOS manufacturers require you to
intervene during boot to get a Boot from CD to function. When the
system reboots, watch for a message like "Press any key to boot from
CD" or the like. If you don't, then the boot proceeds to the next
device (floppy or HDD) and that's what you are describing.
