every time i try to run a program to reintrall help and support i get a error
mess. saying i need the service pack 2 cd.

This might help; I'm not sure. You need to convince Windows to look in
the SP2 setup files, or you can borrow a CD that includes SP2. (This is
under the assumption that you downloaded SP2 and have an SP1 or standard
XP CD).
