I was unable to access Windows Newsgroups until I installed Mozilla as my
browser and e-mail provider.
When I clicked on Windows Newsgroups nothing happened. Nothing. No
indication of what was happening.
Regarding Windows up date: Going to Help and Settings then Windows Update
the same thing happened as with the Newsgroups. Then I got an icon on my
taskbar telling me that I had updates to be installed. I clicked on the icon
and downloaded the updates. Then I got this: "Updates were unable to be
successfully installed."
I then tried using Firefox as my browser, and that solved the problem.
I have Win XP Home.
Any suggestions?

Mozilla is NOT an "email provider" - that's something like AOL or Roadrunner
or Yahoo or Hotmail......

Yes - use a newsreader instead of the horrible web interface.

How to configure Outlook Express to read http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164&product=oex
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/setup.asp

The point I was trying to make was that I could not acess Newsgroups through
IE, but could with Firefox. Maybe I was not too clear on that.
Anyway, thank you for your reply. I think the links will help.
