I have XP with SP2. When I try to open "Help and Support" via the Start
menu, I get the following message:

"Windows cannot open Help & Supprt because a system service is not running.
To fix this problem, start the service "Help & Support".

Of course if I do that, I get the same message. Any idea which system
service is not running, and how can I get Help & Support to work? Thanks.

Right click on MY COMPUTER
Choose Manage
Click the + in front of SERVICE and APPLICATION then click on SERVICES
. Then on the Right Side of the screen Click on HELP and Support
and Choose to Enable it

Thanks Santa

Thanks Ramesh. I tried what you said. I get a list of services, but
unfortunately "Help and Support" is not in that list of services. Do I need
to install something to get it in that list? Thanks.

Click Start/Run and type Services.msc

Ramesh, I tried your suggestions with the following results:

Running %Systemroot%\inf started ok, but I had to manually find some of the
files during the install. I found:

"dataspec.xml" in c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\I386
"pchdt_p3.cab" in c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
"HCAppRes.dll in c:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
"atrace.dll" in c:\windows\systme32

At that point, the install seemed to go ok, but I still did not get "Help
and Support" in the list of services.

I then copied the "helpsvc.re1" file that you attached and renamed it
"helpsvc.reg". When I double-click it I get the following message:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

Any other ideas? Again, thanks for all your help.

Tom

Click Start/Run and type %Systemroot%\Inf
Locate PCHealth.inf and right-click, choose Install.
Insert the XP SP2 source CD when prompted.
If you don't have the integrated SP2 CD, mention the path to
X:\Windows\ServicePackfiles\i386

-or-

If that does not help, find attached the file <helpsvc.re1>
Rename helpsvc.re1 to helpsvc.reg
Merge the contents of the REG file by double-clicking it.
The Help Service entry is created automatically in the registry.

RAMESH - I have been experiencing this same problem. Originally hlpsvc was
not in svc list, restored that registry key and Help & Support was restored.
I am able to set it to automatically load, but it will not start and simply
gives me the message that the executable program that this service is
configured to run in does not implement the service. I have tried all of
Kelly's fixes and none are successful, and I am wondering if there is some
additional help you could offer. The event viewer states the same thing,
with error code 7000. When I ran a config on it, it was the same config as
yours that you have posted before. I am running XP Home SP2 - this DID
happen after SP2 install, and the file - pchealth\helpctr\binaries - version
5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) -- SO any help ANYONE can give would
be immensely helpful. THANKS ;)
