Help! 1394 tcp/ip disappearance!

i have been transferring files using the 1394 port
between two XP computers. however yesterday i tried again
and the internet protocol has somehow disabled itself on
one of the machines. but only on the 1394 connection. the
ethernet connection seems fine...

ipconfig.exe only shows the existance of an ip address
for the ethernet card.

when i try to 'Repair' the 1394 connection, i get a
dialog - 'TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection.
Cannot Proceed.'

in 'network connections', the 'support' tab of the 1394
connection status shows all TCP/IP parameters
as '<Unavailable>'. The 'Details' and 'Repair' buttons
are greyed out...

seems strange since it worked fine a few days ago...

does this sound familiar?! can anyone help please?!

Two thoughts go through my mind.

1. The next step is to remove the 1394 adapter, at least in
Device Manager if not physically. Then let the operating system
redetect it and reinstall the driver and the stack.

2. You may have caught adware, spyware, or a virus.

i already disabled the adapter with device manager (it's
a built in 1394 port on a laptop) yet when it reinstalled
it exhibited exactly the same problem.

the laptop that has the TCP/IP problem has never been
connected to the internet. when the connection was up and
running it was with another laptop also never connected
to the internet and both XP. it worked fine.

yet it was when i connected one of these non-internet
laptops through 1394 to an XP SP2 desktop with internet
access, that is when the TCP/IP functionality disappeared
on that non-internet laptop.

could spyware have been the cause even though i have
never connected the laptop to the internet? the closest
it's gotten to the internet was when i connected it
through the 1394 cable to the XP SP2 machine that has
internet access?

i hope that this might clarify the situation... i'm
really at a loss here.

I have few ideas on this. Next thing I'd try is to connect the
1394 port to that of another computer and see what happens.
