Hi
On my cd-rom drive I have an earphone socket but when plugging in
earphones the music is still coming out of main speakers...is there an
option in windows XP to change this etc

Plugging in headphones will often auto-mute the speakers, but that only works on
your soundcard, not on a optical drive.
 
The headphone jack on the drive has no bearing on the audio data sent to
your sound card and as such, it won't mute the speakers automatically. Some
sound cards, such as the SB Audigy Platinum, have a headphone jack that can
mute the speakers, or else you can just mute the speakers with the sound
volume control on the taskbar without opening the whole mixer app.

try checking the hardware. check it if it is connected to
the soundcard.
