Heading numbering

When I add a level of indenture to a document, say a sub-paragraph to
paragraph 2.2, I want the number to be 2.2.1. I get 1.1.1. When I attempt to
re-format the number, it screws up all the other heading numbers. Is there
any way to turn off all the help Word 2003 gives you? And I do mean ALL THE
HELP. Or do I have to uninstall it and go back to Word 2000. If necessary, I
am willing to uninstall Windows, switch to Linux, and use Open Office.
Unfortunately, the company won't allow that.

Thank you for your response. I will study the references you gave. Be
advised, I do use the heading styles rather than numbered lists, so that is
not the problem. It would really be less frustrating if I could just turn off
ALL auto "HELP" that Word gives me. I guess I just like to do it my way
rather than Bill's way.

Hi Rolla

It might help to turn off all autocorrect options. These normally mess
everything up
Numbered headingstyles are based upon the outline numbered lists.
So select the whole line (also the paragraph mark) Select Heading 1, Go to
numbered list, go to outline number tab, select the second from the left on
the bottom row (you than might have to hit reset style) and press o.k. (In
the style it should say something like heading 1, heading 2 etc
Now when you want to go to 1.1 just select the whole sentence again and
select heading 2 in the styles. As long as you faithfully use this way of
working throughout the document (and have not got any autocorrect options
ticked) you should be all right.

If you use headings a lot it might make sence to create your own template
with the headings you want. Good luck

Jo
