Header Gigantic

Created header for a document template. Opened it up this evening, clicked
view header, Word 2000 shows the header taking up the entire page. Tried
hitting delete key repeatedly, tried selecting with mouse, tried adjusting
settings in page layout, nothings gets rid of the gigantic dotted line header
area. Content I wrote into the header area is only a couple of inches
vertically.

Use ? and then the arrow with the question mark sign, then click on the
line to see what kind of formatting (style, direct) you are dealing
with. Display all non-printing characters and text boundaries (Tools |
Options | View). Unless the document has become corrupt, there must be
some content in the header or footer which toggles what you see (maybe a
large table, a drawing object which could be "white", etc.). As a test
and while in the Header, hit CTRL-A (SelectAll) and Delete.

Additionally, having the vertical alignment set to Bottom (Layout tab of
Page Setup) will cause the header to appear to take up most of the page.
