Create reusable header object

I want to be able to create a header template that is referenced from a main
document, so if I make changes to that header file – then any documents that
reference this header template will get the new header content automatically.
(the header will include graphics and text)

I know I can use a .dot template – but that just embeds the current template
format in that file.

I want to use this for our letterhead and other publications, so if we make
changes to that header – then any new files, or any older files will get that
new header formatting automatically.

Can I do this in Word?

You can store the header contents in (the body of) a separate document, and
then use INCLUDETEXT fields to add it into multiple documents. You would
have to update the fields to actually see the modified contents, but such an
update can be forced with a macro.

You can also store the header as an AutoText entry (building block) and
insert it as an AutoText field.

That is probably even easier. The AUTOTEXT field is useful. Does that field
work properly with the Building Blocks in Word 2007 (I seem to recall
someone saying that it didn't)? Of course, the OP hasn't told us that he is
in fact using Word 2007.

I think maybe it was the AutoTextList field that didn't work correctly
because AutoText entries are no longer categorized by style.

Hmmm. They may no longer be filed in quite the same way, but the autotext
list field should only display autotext entries compiled in the relevant
style much as before. For the autotext list field to work with building
blocks, I believe they have to be filed in the autotext gallery - but they
can be stored in the normal template, building blocks.dotx or add-in and
should still display according to the requested style. What is missing is
that handy cross reference by style.
