He wouldn't be able to access the drive at all if this were the case :-)

Greetings --

The drive wouldn't be accessible, nor the PC bootable, if that
were the case.

It's possible that the lead from the motherboard to the LED is
connected incorrectly.

IDE cables are notched so you cannot install them backwards.
If the light is staying on all of the time I believe that the wire
from the front panel is inverted. On the newer mainboards
there are usually two places that these can be plugged

The LED's are polarized connections and will not work at all if connected
backwards :-)

Greetings --

This is true of many, but certainly not all IDE ribbon cables.

That's contrary to my experience.

That they are polarized, or that they will not work at all if the connection
is reversed??? Polarized connections will only work if the wires are
connected in the correct orientation. However, that doesn't mean they cannot
be accidentally installed on the wrong pin outs which may cause the light to
stay on :-)

Greetings --

If seen the reversed HD LED connection cause the LED to be
normally, steadily illuminated, and blink off when there's drive
activity.

You must dance to a different drummer. I have 6 mainboard
manuals and they all say that if the front panel HDD LED is
connected backwards it will not work.
