hd reading/writing when nothing is happening

Thanks in advance for the help with this problem.

Lately I have been experiencing a temporary slowdown/freeze and I notice
that the hd light is blinking. I can be moving the mouse across the page,
for example, when it will start responding erratically or stop. As this is
happening the hd light blinks even though nothing is being saved or opened.

I have disabled indexing, run virus checks and adware and spyware removal
tools.

I do have a wireless router attached but i haven't checked to see if it
happens with my laptop also. Any suggestions?

Try running disk clean up utility,then defrag after,then go to run,type:cmd
In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,then type:EXIT Restart computer.

Everything seems to check out ok. I have process explorer running and i
notice that the problem occurs when norton automatic update is running... it
grabs 100% of the resources for 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
