When I try to update my XP professional I never get past initializing
updates. Also the same thing happens when I try to install directx 9c. any
ideas?

Hi,

Click start/run, type windowsupdate.log and click ok. Scroll to the bottom
and look for error codes (0x00000000) from the most recent attempt. Post
back with the most recent codes.

Hi,

It looks like the last one, KB896423, did not complete installation upon
reboot (you have rebooted, haven't you?). Check the Control Panel/Add &
Remove, make sure the option to show updates is checked, and uninstall that
one if it is listed. Then clear it from the
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder as well. Then retry visiting
the update site.
