Having trouble setting up home network

M

Mike

I have a PC running Windows 2000 Professional connected to
the internet with a DSL modem and I'm using a router to
share the connection with two other computers--one is
running XP Home and the other is (a Mac) running OS X. I'm
having trouble setting up file and print sharing.

Neither the Mac nor the XP can see the printer. The XP
does see the shared drive on the 2K Pro, but no printer.
The Mac doesn't even see the 2K Pro.

I've followed the Help directions as best I can but am
currently frustrated.

Can someone help walk me through this?

Thank you

Mike

I can't help you with the mac, but on a windows network:

make sure they all have the same protocols
make sure each machine has all user accounts on it, i.e. every user, on any
machine, must have an account on every machine.
make sure they are all on the same workgroup

can each machine see itself?

Andrew,
Forgive my ignorance, but I need a bit more info.

How do I check that the protocols are the same?

Does my son Jack--for instance--needs an account on both
the Win2K and the Win XP machine? And do I need to make
sure his user name is exactly the same on both? Therefore
must he sign on under his account?

How do I make sure they are on the same workgroup?

How do I check to see if they can see themselves?

Again, forgive my newbee ignorance, and thank you for your
help.

How do I check that the protocols are the same?

goto network neighbourhoods, then your connection, properties. check the
protocol list is the same.

yes

How do I make sure they are on the same workgroup?

mycomputer ->properties -> network identification.
check the workgroups are the same.
if not, run the wizard and set them all to the same name.
How do I check to see if they can see themselves?

browse network neighbourhoods, see if the computer name, of the computer
youre on appears as a machine in the list

Again, forgive my newbee ignorance, and thank you for your
help.
no problem
