local area connection won't receive

I'm using a Gigafast USB wireless adapter to connect an old but srvicable
Compaq laptop runiing Win 2K Pro to my SMC router which currently links 4
desktops:
2 wired running XP home
1 wired running 2K Pro
1 wireless running XP home

The Gigafast sofware connects to the router and the router software says
that the adapter is connecting successfully (based on MAC address) but
windows cannot connect to the internet and the local area connection
transmits packet but is not receiving.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

is your 2k box set to use dhcp on the wireless connection ?
and is your wireless devices using wep or any other security ?
when you do at the cmd prompt ipconfig /all
what do you see ?

Hey Jay, thanks for the reply. It seems the adapter I was using is defective
so I bought a different one but there was another issue.

Actually I found the cure in another post and I will rewrite it here for the
benefit of others. It is very simple and I'm surprised not more well known.
To use wireless networking in Windows 2000 the Wireless configuration service
must be running. Unfortunately this is not its default setting, here is what
you do:
Start -> Run ->
type "services.msc", click "OK" ->
scroll to the bottom of the list of services and select "wireless
configuration" ->
Select "automatic" for startup type and "start" under service status (thus
starting the service) That should help a lot of people

Thanks again, Rob
