Have two WinXP Home Edition Machines on workgroup, but can't share files

I have two machines running WinXP Home (old machine and new machine). Both are patched current via Windows Update. They are connected via a Linksys hub / cable modem (home networking setup from Comcast). I ran the "Set up a home network" wizard on both machines. From my new machine, I can see the old machine within the MSHOME workgroup, but when I try to doubleclick on the old machine, I get the following error message:

"\\[computer name] is not accessible. You might not have permission use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you ahve access permissions.

The network path was not found."

From the old machine, I can't even get access to the MSHOME workgroup...

Both machines had 802.1x enabled, but I disabled it.

If you look in the post called:
Is there something very simple wrong here, dated 20/5/04 in this newgroup
and look in the reply from myself that is one from last, there is a list of
all the settings
that are relevant.
I couldn't get my network working and I changed this in machine 2:

WINS: WINS addresses in order of use: nil there
Enable LM hosts lookup: ticked
Netbios setting: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP: ticked

To this:

NetBios setting: tick Default

That did the trick for me.

Marge,

Do either of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445
and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in
the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

For file sharing with XP Home, make sure that the Guest account is enabled, with
identical, non-blank passwords, on each computer.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
