File/Print share workgroup on ME and XP machines

G

Guest

Hi: Have an old Compaq running ME hooked into a Linksys Wireless router as a
hub and use a lap top wirelessly. Both machines work fine for accessing the
internet. Recently purchased a Dell 8400. All three machines can see the
internet through the router.

Want to get file/print sharing between the 8400 and the compaq. Ran the
Network set-up wizard on the 8400 (XP professional) and ran the XP set-up
disk on the ME machine to set up the workgroup (using the Set up home or
small office networking option as recommended by the dell network guide).

On the ME machine (under Network Places) it is showing me the workgroup name
but only the ME machine, it cannot see the 8400. The 8400 does not show me
any workgroups and I get this error message when I try to force it to look
for the workgroup "Mshome is not accessable. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to
find out if you have access permission. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available." Mshome is the same workgroup name on
both computers. I have tried running the wizard several times but does not
help.

The workgroup name is the same for both machines (the default "MSHOME") and
the computers have unique names.

Also I got the IP addresses of both machines. When I ping the ME machine
from the Dell running XP it passes all the tests. When I try pinging the
Dell machine while on it I get an error. When I try pinging the Dell machine
from the ME machine also get an error but am okay when ping the ME machine
from the ME machine. I have norton antivirus running but didn't activate the
firewall (I rely on the firewall on SP2 and on the router).

Any suggestions?
thx
Tired and frustrated :)

On the ME machine, make sure you are logging in with a password and are
using Client for Microsoft Networking (as opposed to Family Logon).
Create an identical user account and password on the XP box. Make sure
you've shared out resources and set permissions properly on the XP box.
Now see if it works. You may need to reboot.

Malke: Sorry for being too much of a novice. I haven't entered a password
on the ME machine how would I be able to do that (a password box came up
during the install of the router (which I did before I purchased the XP
machine); the tech help said to ignore and I just press "Enter" w/o a
password when the machine boots). Also how can I check if I am using Client
for MS Networking (vs. Family Logon)? Finally how would I create a user
account and password on the XP. Sorry for all the questions. (but am still
unclear why I can't ping the XP box from the XP keyboard).

Please don't apologize for being a novice. Everyone started out that way
once. Even if you don't have a logon password for the ME machine, you
have a user name. Unfortunately, ME is the only MS consumer operating
system I *don't* have running on a box so I can't check exactly for
you. I will be working from a Win98 box so it might be a little
different for you on ME, but let's try this:

1. On the ME desktop, right-click on the icon for My Network Places
(Network Neighborhood in Win98), then left-click on Properties. This
will bring you the Network Properties box. On the Configuration tab
sort of in the middle, you'll see Primary Network Logon with a
drop-down box. It should say in there, "Client for Microsoft Networks".
If it says something else, change it. When you do that, you'll probably
have to reboot and will then get a chance to enter a password. Enter
one you'll remember - you can set the machine to automatically log you
in later. That will also give you your user name. After you reboot, you
can also see the user name if you go to the Start button and on top of
the Shut Down choice you'll have "Log Off Username".

2. On the same Configuration tab, my Win98 shows a "File and Printer
Sharing" button. You should have something similar. Click that button
and make sure you've allowed file and printer sharing.

3. Make sure you've actually shared out something. For instance, let's
say you wanted to share your C: drive. Open My Computer and find the
icon for the C: drive. Right-click it and choose "Sharing". Now you'll
be able to make a share and set it for access however you want.
Probably you'll want to set it for Full access without a password.

4. Now if you want to automatically log onto ME with that user account
and password, install the right TweakUI and it will give you a chance
to set the automatic logon. Here's a link to download TweakUI for ME:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui

I believe after you install TweakUI for ME it will show up as a Control
Panel applet - (it does in Win98). If you need help installing TweakUI,
let me know.

Now, onto the XP box.

Go to the Control Panel and double-click the User Accounts applet. Here
you will be able to create a new account and password with the same
user name and password you are using on the ME box. You don't need to
actually *log in* to the XP box with this account - it just needs to be
there.

Make sure you've shared out resources on the XP box, too.

Last step: check your firewall settings on all machines (and all
machines should have a firewall). Make sure the Local Area Network
(lan) is included as trusted.

Sometimes it takes around 15 minutes for the network to propagate. See
whether this works and if you need more help, please post back. And no
apologizing!

Malke: Before I get into all of this I want to first try and not run my
Norton Antivirus. Even though I didn't activate the firewall, just from
reading other postings with similar problems firewall issues seems to be a
common thread. I am not seeing the Norton in my "Start" folder. Where would
I need to remove it so it does not automatically run when I boot up. Also do
you know of an easy way to check if there are any other firewalls running (I
have already disabled the SP2 one). Many thanks.

Malke:
Followed your steps but still a no-go. Specifically:
Step 1. okay (but the machine will still allow me to boot even if I don't
enter a password but I do so anyway)
Step 2. okay
Step 3. okay
Step 4. decided to pass until I get everything sorted out
Step 5. The account name is the one I have been using (its the same under
the ME and XP) added a password using the same as the ME machine. Now have
to input whenever booting the XP machine.
Step 6. Yes resouces are shared (the sharedox folder).
Step 7. Have disabled all the firewalls I can find on the XP. There is no
firewall (to the best of my knowledge on the ME machine).

Still can't ping the XP machine from the XP machine but can ping the ME from
the XP.

Robert L had requested I post the results of Net Share. Here it is. Hope it

Sorry it took so long to get back to you - I'm working hard, cleaning
infected Windows machines for clients. You don't need to stop NAV; this
should not be affecting networking. Nor should you ever need to turn
off firewalls; you just need to set the firewalls to know that the IP
range of the lan is trusted.

Go to MVP Hans-Georg Michna's network troubleshooter and do it:

http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm

If that doesn't solve your problem, report back with the results you got
OR consider calling a local pro to come over and set up the network for
you. Someone onsite is going to be able to take a quick look and get
you going. It shouldn't be too expensive.

Good luck,

Malke

Malke: thanks will give it a shot (unfortunately am tied up at work until
the weekend), will report back then. Cheers.

Malke: Good news. I thought my Norton firewall was not enabled when in fact
it was. Once I configured it to permit the ME machine it worked fine. Just
have to set up the print sharing :)

Many thanks for your help.

Excellent! I'm so glad you got it sorted. Thanks very much for letting
me know.
