Windows XP Have I broken it?

I think my Windows XP picture and fax viewer has become corrupted. When I try to re-size a photograph I am presented with the "Open with" dialogue box. When I tick the open with picture fax viewer the photo remains but when I click the re-size icon the process repeats itself.
I am a bear with a small brain, can anyone help me using simple language, please?
